Regine Schumann art exhibition in Marbella
German artist Regine Schumann opened her art exhibition in Lijomi showroom in Marbella last Friday 21st of July 2023. She is a minimalist artist working with Light Art and currently living in Cologne (Germany).
The artist started her career as a painter and intially had difficulty imagining anything else: "I loved my brushes, the paint, the smell, everything, really" she says. Painting continued inspiring and influencing Regine, especially at the level of colour and composition.
"Yes, today I still consider myself a painter. Of course not in the classical sense of the word, but every spatial installation starts with choosing the colour. Only then, does the shape follow."
To a large extent, Regine Schumann's sculptures and installations derive their visual appeal and emotional depth from this dialogue with painting. Her works demonstrate a remarkable sense of colour, not only in the way in these combinations harmoniously match the tree-dimensional formats.
In the recent decades, Regine Schumann has made clear, simple shapes her stylistic trademark. She invariably uses abstract, geometric shapes (squares, rectangles, circles, ellipses, ...), with a special attention to volume, scale and proportions.
"Whenever I start a new installation or sculpture, I keep in mind where exactly the work is going to be displayed"

An unlimited experience of light, colour and space
"I don't believe in the existence of specific rules in art. Everything is free.
It depends on what you want to achieve and what the right form is fo the right idea"

Colormirror rainbow glowing after orange
Regine Schumann's use of refined visual vocabulary and new industrial materials betrays the influence of minimal art from the sixties. Her affinity with Minimalism is even more noticeable in sculptures such as colormirror rainbow glowing after orange (2023), where she plays with the repetition of elongated, three-dimensional volumes on a wall. Depending on the viewer vantage point, not only does the overall appearence of the sculpture change, but also the semi-transparent paarts overlap in different ways, producing different colouor tones.
Colour changing according to the light
Each of Schumann's works reacts remarkably differently to light. This is largely due to the surface treatment and transparency of the glass panes and the colour pigmnets used.
All her sculptures have one important thing in common: they all give off a slight glimmer of colour, which gradually absorbs into the wall. This optical effect not only contributes to the poetic character of her works, but also give them a remarkably intangible "aura".
Interaction with the spatial context
Regine Schumann's sculptures and installations cannot be captured at a glance. Her works are chamaleon-like, she insists. Changing light conditions produce important changes in their global appearance and their interaction with the spatial context. It is precisely in this area that Schumann's oeuvre differs from that of other leading light artists. She displays her works under both natural and artificial light. Her interest in what the artist calls the transformative power of light has even led her to work with blacklights.
Sculptures able to affect spectators' mood
"Interestingly, people who have never met before often stand together in front of my installations and point out to each other the changes they are underegoing. The feelings that arise in this way strengthen my belief in the impact of colour. Not only the space, but also the spectators' mood is determined by the light. And that's what I want to achieve with my art. It's my ambition to throw overboard the conventions of painting and to make possible an unlimited experience of colour, light and space"
